Game Mechanics

by The Mordheimer.

A good piece of advice is to read the rule book first! Yes, many players (specially veteran players) skip the rule book, and make new rules as they go along. This will only cause pain. Once you read the rules once, then try not to simplify the rules; simplify the game instead. You can downloaded for free at the Specialist Games site.

Basically, this is a 2+ player miniature game. Each player selects a specific warband type. In Mordheim, a warband is a defined group of adventurers, warriors, wizards, priests, mercenaries and/or animals that fight as a tactical unit. Each player controls one warband, composed of a certain number of warriors, each represented with a miniature. All the warbands have the same general game mechanics (i.e. stats, composition, etc) but each individual group has specific advantages/disadvantages. These traits are represented in various forms, such as total number of warriors allowed, special abilities, point costs, movement, etc.

To play the game you need the following basic components:

  • A flat surface, preferably a 4' by 4' table.
  • Miniatures to represent each member of the warband.
  • A couple of dice, the regular six-sided kinds.
  • A ruler, to measure distances in inches.
  • Pencil and paper, to write your warbands.
  • The main rulebook... get a free copy at the Specialist Game website.
For better enjoyment, you can add:

  • Terrain: not only ruined houses, trees, fences and other objects will provide cover and thus change the playing "feel" of the game, they just look to damned cool!
  • Painted & converted miniatures: Sure you can play pretending those coins are your warriors, but having nice miniatures will enhance the game. After all, part of the fun is creating your warband!
  • Plenty of dice: Trust me... you want to have your own dice and let your opponent keeps his jinxed blocks!
  • A 4' tape measure: It is compact, cheap and you can bend it.
  • A laser pointer: The techie way to check Line-of-Sight!
  • Army Builder: Don't write your warbands when you can let a computer generate all the stats.
Mordheim, being a turn base game takes some time. While it is not as long as a 2,000 point WH40k game, it may take up to 1 hour to play... depending on those evil Rout-Out tests! The players will decide in a specific scenario, in which clear objectives (i.e. find treasure, hunt a monster, find a secret weapon, etc) will be determined. Each player will take a turn following the Turn Sequence:

  1. Recovery: During the recovery phase you may attempt to rally individuals who have lost their nerve and recover models that are Knocked Down or Stunned.
  2. Movement: During the movement phase you may move the warriors of your warband according to the rules given in the Movement section.
  3. Shooting: In the shooting phase you may shoot with any appropriate weapons as described in the rules for shooting.
  4. Hand-to-Hand Combat: During the hand-to-hand combat phase all models in hand-to-hand combat may fight. Note that both sides fight in the hand-to-hand combat phase, regardless of whose turn it is.
The winner is the player that either destroy or forces a withdrawal of the opponent's warband. The game becomes very interesting when story based scenarios are created, and in campaign settings, your surviving warband member will grow in power (i.e. better stats, equipment, etc.)
