Gathering of Warriors
In Mordheim, a warband is a defined group of adventurers,
warriors, wizards, priests, mercenaries and/or animals that fight as a tactical
unit. Each player controls one warband, composed of a certain number of
warriors, each represented with a miniature. All the warbands have the same
general game mechanics (i.e. stats, composition, etc) but each individual group
has specific advantages/disadvantages. These traits are represented in various
forms, such as total number of warriors allowed, special abilities, point costs,
movement, etc.
Over time, the people at Games Workshop and the Specialist
Games had created, play tested and publish many kinds of warbands; basically one
for each type of troop or race. This is not an easy process mainly
because since it is a skirmish game, balance is crucial.
Games Workshop, in its infinite wisdom, published a list of
Official
Warbands in their Official FAQ, reproduced in our Ultimate Mordheim FAQ &
Errata. Their main purpose is to indicate which warbands have been found "fair &
balanced" during play testing. Here you can find a list of Official Warbands.
Some warbands that were created either by Games Workshop, the
Specialist Games and/or submitted collaborations managed to be published in official
supplements. Most of this warbands were created as part of the different
settings that follow Mordheim's rules, such as Lustria, Mousillon, or the Khemri
Lands to name a few examples. For one reason or another had not been revised
and/or tweaked to "perfection" and thus had not received the Official Seal of
Approval. This warbands are known in the Mordheim gaming community as
Unofficial
Warbands. The use of this warbands is very restricted in Games Workshop Tournaments.
Warbands that are even farther behind in their creation
process than the Unofficial Warbands are known as the
Experimental Warbands. The
warbands with this classification were created (mostly by fans) and possibly
play tested in local hobby groups. Even when they play well, most of them have
never been submitted to the Specialist Games Mordheim Rules Committee for
approval. Of course, if Unofficial Warbands have not had their status/ranking
updated since 2003 there is little chance that the Experimental Warbands will
become official any time soon. Do not be fooled by their status... most of them
have been created by "heavy hitters" like Tommy Mόller (prolific
creator of multiple official, unofficial and experimental warbands, optional
rules and The Archive Pestillen),
the creative teams of the Lustria, Khemri, Karak Azgal and Mousillon settings.
Their creations that have not been published in any way by Games Workshop will be located in
this section.
Official Warband: Any warband published by GW, which is currently
allowed to be used on Official GW Mordheim Tournaments. They are listed on
the Specialist Games Mordheim Rules Review.
Unofficial Warband: Any warband published by GW, which is currently
NOT allowed to be used on Official GW Mordheim Tournaments. They tend to be
listed on the Specialist Games Mordheim Rules Review, but as a rule of
thumb... if it is not explicitly listed as Official, then it is Unofficial!
Experimental Warband: Any warband NEVER published by GW, and thus is
NOT allowed to be on Official GW Mordheim Tournaments. For obvious reasons,
they are not mentioned on the Specialist Games Mordheim Rules Review. They
tend to be home-brewed warbands... they maybe fair & balanced or not. Some
of them appear to be ready for the big time, but they have never been
submitted to SG for review, or simply they have been lost in the shuffle.
What Warbands Are Available and Where Can I Find them?
*NB - The Shadow Warriors were an Official Warband until the
July 2004 Rules Review,
where they were relegated to Unofficial Status by the Official Games Workshop Mordheim
Rules Committee.
**NB The Pit Fighter Warband and Beastmen were completely redesigned for
their second release, to the extent that they can be considered a completely
different warband to the original.
Which warband is best? Read the article
here! The Dragon Caves' Players: For the purposes of our campaign, if you want to
play any Unofficial or Experimental Warband you must justify its inclusion in their
background. All warbands must be pre-approved. See "House
Rules" for details.
